Summaries and Guidelines: integrate the body of evidence on a topic and aim to provide recommendations for optimal management

Synopses: succinct descriptions of an individual study or systematic review often found in specialized (secondary evidence) journals.

  • ACP Journal Club (found in the Annals of Internal Medicine)
  • DARE (Database of Abstracts of Reviews and Effects) accessible via Cochrane Library
  • Specialized secondary evidence journals

Syntheses: comprehensive summaries of research related to a focused clinical question. Include systematic reviews and meta-anlyses.

  • Cochrane Library

  • PubMed Clinical Queries
  • Bibliographic databases such as PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, TRIP, and ACCESSSS that have study/publication type filters for systematic reviews and meta-anlyses
