Our Subscription

When on campus, MD students, MPAS students, full-time HWCOM faculty, HWCOM staff, and medical residents (who are at sites affiliated with FIU) can access UpToDate by going to > Databases A-Z > U > UpToDate (aka UpToDate via the Medical Library), and signing in with their FIU e-mail address and password.

Only full-time faculty, MD students and MPAS students can register for accounts that will allow them to access UpToDate from off-campus computers or from their personal mobile devices. When signing up for accounts, they must do so with their FIU e-mails. Below are instructions to download and set up the app version on your mobile devices.

If you already have a personal UpToDate account, download and open the app on your device and sign in.  If you do not yet have a personal UpToDate account, follow the instruction below.

FIU Medical Library Instructions with Screenshots

  1. Download the app but do not start within the app itself.
  2. Go to UpToDate via our website and going this UpToDate (via the Medical Library) link or by going to the Medical Library Homepage and using the following path: Medical Databases > U > UpToDate.
  3. If you are off-campus and have not already been prompted to sign into a library session with your FIU credentials, you will be asked to do so now. If you are off-campus you will still be required to sign in again because UpToDate needs to verify that you are an HWCOM student or faculty member with a full-time appointment.
  4. Once on the UpToDate homepage, you can see in the upper right-hand corner that you are getting access under the name "The Florida International University Boa".  Next to the welcome message is an option to create a personal account (see screenshot below).
  1. When you click "Register" you will be prompted to enter your e-mail and to create a username and password. Remember, to use your FIU e-mail.
  1. You will receive a confirmation message with further instructions which, as of the Fall of 2017 looked as follows:

Screenshot of what the conformation e-mail looked like in the Fall of 2017. The username has been blanked out. The appearance of this form may have changed by the time you read this guide.

  1. Be sure to remember your password. You will need these credentials the first time you start using the UpToDate mobile app.
  2. Once you have an account, open the app on your device and sign in with the account you just created.
  3. You are now ready to begin using your UpToDate mobile app.

In order to maintain your access to UpToDate, you must confirm your affiliation at least once every 90 days. In the days leading up to this expiration date, in-application and email messaging will inform you of the need to re-verify in order to maintain access.  They will provide instructions for doing so. If you do not re-verify by day 90, you will lose mobile and remote access and you will have to sign up again.

Once you have set up your personal UpToDate account you do not have to be using campus Wi-Fi or simulating our IP range to use it.  You may use your UpToDate mobile app by connecting to your hospital or clinic's Wi-Fi, (any Wi-Fi, actually) and making sure you are signed into your app with the personal account you just created.
